I admire those who carefully weigh becoming a member of a particular congregation. However church membership is a small, even trivial, decision when compared with the cost of discipleship under Jesus Christ.
Prospective members often ask if they will be expected to tithe, give ten percent of their income. Like many television evangelists I soften the answer saying something like: “We encourage percentage giving, so that through whatever percentage you discern with God, you may give thanks for all the blessing you receive from God.”
Luke records a much more challenging answer from Jesus:
So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.Jesus as recorded in Luke 14:33
