God provided the greatest April Fools surprise!
Jesus was dead. He had hung on a cross for hours. Soldiers had poked a spear into his side. His friends had placed him in a tomb and rolled a stone to seal it. Pilate had placed a guard at the tomb so no one could steal his body and say he had been raised from the dead.
Then April Fools! He is alive!
A Tip for Parents
How might you feel if you found the tomb of a recently deceased friend empty? The oldest and most reliable version of the Gospel according to Mark ends with three women running from the empty tomb afraid to say anything to anyone. This was so disturbing to the early church that the scribes added three different endings!
Cornelius, a Roman Centurion, had a vision to contact Simon Peter. When Peter began to speak he and his friends had certain expectations about who could receive the Holy Spirit. The message was well known. There were no more surprises in store; at least until Cornelius heard what Peter had to say.
Easter should be a shocking, life changing experience every year! I still remember sitting beside my younger brother when we were children, quietly awaiting worship to begin one Easter. Suddenly three trumpets blared over our heads from the balcony announcing the processional. I still remember his shock as he jumped out of his seat. Perhaps that is why he learned to play the trombone.
We will also celebrate the Lord’s Supper this Sunday. As you come forward to receive the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation you will have an opportunity to place a flower in the Cross transforming it from an instrument of torture into a instrument of beauty and hope.
Easter Egg Hunt
Come and celebrate the surprise of Easter at 8:15 AM and 10:00 AM on Sunday April 1st, at Temple Terrace Presbyterian Church.
